August 5 Honorable Mention - Debbie Canady

"The Old Caldwell Place". This magnificent historic home sits on a very high hill north of Puryear on Old Caldwell Road. It is now owned and occupied by Mr. & Mrs. Chris Beloit, who have done a wonderful job preserving the character and history associated with this beautiful place. Originally built in1841 and completed in 1846, every brick in the house was made on site and hand laid by slaves. The house bears scars where cannon balls hit the house during the Civil War, but the 18" thick walls would not let them penetrate. There were also bullet holes in the walls of the house from the war. Legend (and the family who lives in the home) has it that Col. Tom Caldwell shot and killed a Union soldier in the house at the top of the stairs. They say that the ghost of that soldier is still in the house and can be heard and sometimes even seen in the house.
